We had the great opportunity of interviewing Emma Broadhurst to tap into her wealth of knowledge in the field of Herbalism. Emily and Madi have both been actively focused on gut health/healing this year and wanted to share with you all the wisdom and goodness they learned from Emma about how this can be possible through divine mother nature and our plant friends!
The gut plays a vital role in our overall health and well-being. It can help control everything from our weight to our mood to brain health, inflammation and immune function. Not only that, but 90% of serotonin, the happy feel good hormone, is produced in the gut.
First, we want to share with you all a quote that really held a powerful place throughout the interview, as we were able to make so many connections back to it!
“You are what you eat, you are what you don’t excrete, and you are what you absorb.”– Herbalist David Winston. This quote holds such a simple yet juicy understanding of the human health, especially when learning about how to heal the Gut.
Gut health is central to our immune health due to the microbiome connection and lymphatic tissue that resides in our intestinal lining. It is also an essential component to our emotional wellbeing and mental health in relationship to our enteric nervous system, where there are neurons that are woven through the gut lining. Serotonin and dopamine are also produced in the gut, which are key to mood and GI motility/elimination as well.
The first important step in healing the Gut is awareness and a deep listening to our body. Acknowledging the communication that our bodies are transmitting from within is so incredibly important in knowing what feels best to heal or tend to our physical and emotion needs. In this interview Emma talked about how “reconnecting to plants for supporting our healing reconnects us to earth and our body in a practical but also highly spiritual, sacred way. This tender appreciation reminds us of our innate belonging and interdependence with all living beings. “
Below are the herbs that Emma shared with us that can be most useful and potent in healing the Gut.
Bitters blends for enzymatic/liver support which help to support digestion and reduce gas.
Herbs typically used as bitter blends are:
- Gentian root
- Angelica root
- Burdock root
- Orange peel
This typically comes in an alcohol extract (tincture form) and is also available in apple cider vinegar formulas for those who don’t take or like alcohol.
Gut bath infusion (steeped in boiled water minimum 20 mins) can also be used to tone and support tissue healing after the source of inflammation is reduced/removed.
Herbs that can be used for this are:
- Plantain leaf
- Marshmallow root/leaf
It is also possible to recolonize the microbiome with therapeutic probiotic through:

- Probiotic foods; sauerkraut
In moving towards our healthiest divine and authentic selves we believe that it is so important to consistently check in with our bodies and hold a space for the inner being that is always trying to relay information. As this process is continued, the love for ourselves and the relationship that is being created becomes deeper and stronger.
